Supporting the Church in East Africa

Freely, Freely

I used to sing a song in church that went: “He said, ‘Freely, freely, thou hast received / Freely, freely give.” The lyrics were based on Jesus’ words in Matthew 11:

“These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them… ‘Proclaim as you go, saying “The kingdom of heaven is at hand’… You received without paying; give without pay. Acquire no gold nor silver nor copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, nor two tunics nor sandals nor a staff.’” (Matthew 10:5-10)

The Flock & The Farm

If you’ve ever driven between Los Angeles and San Francisco, you probably remember the smell of Harris Ranch. A hundred thousand cows produce a unique stink. Lately, that image of a sprawling cattle farm has been stuck in my head. I’ve been thinking about the differences between a shepherd with his flock, and a farmer with his herd.

Being Young In Ministry

“‘Let days speak and many years teach wisdom.’ But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. It is not the old who are wise, nor the aged who understand what is right.” (Job 32:7-9)

“Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.” (Psalm 146:3-4)

“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12)

“Hold me fast, let me stand in the hollow of Thy hand / Keep me safe, til the storm passes by.” (Mosie Lister, “Til The Storm Passes By”)

The Matter of Giving and Receiving

In Philippians 4:10-19, Paul poignantly summarizes the relationship between “givers” and “receivers” in gospel ministry. Our Santa Monica bible study recently finished studying the book of Philippians, and just as we came to this passage, we were prayerfully awaiting funds so that we could leave for Nairobi. It was such a blessing to see Scriptural instruction come to life before our eyes. In this passage, Paul thanks the Philippian church for a financial gift they sent to him, addressing both the receiver (4:10-14) and the giver (4:15-17).

Sounds of Kenya

Since we aren’t currently there and can’t post our own pictures, check out this sweet video that incorporates the (very accurate) sights and sounds of Kenya with awesome editing. Sadly, I didn’t make this video – but this is my ideal of what a degree in ethnomusicology would’ve produced. Maybe someday! 😉
